You can report real estate tax (also called property tax) as an itemized deduction under Deductions & Credits. (Note: If the real estate tax is for rental or business property, you will enter the tax in the rental or business section of TurboTax, respectively.)

To enter your real estate taxes (property taxes) in TurboTax:

  • Open (continue) your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click My Account (top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type real estate tax.
  • In the results box, highlight real estate tax, then click GO.
  • You'll land on Did you pay property or real estate taxes in 2016? Click Yes.
  • Next you may Enter the property taxes you paid. (Click the screenshot below to enlarge it for reference.)
Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
