  3. Click Continue next to your Michigan return.
  4. On the page Your 2021 Michigan taxes are ready for us to check, click Start or Edit next to Credits and taxes.
  5. Click Start or Revisit next to Homestead Property Tax Credit on the page Take a look at Michigan credits and taxes.
  6. Answer yes to the question Do you want to review your total household resources?
  7. Answer yes to the question Do you meet the qualifications? on the page Location of Property.
  8. Continue past the page Any of These Sources of Household Resources?

I understand how to fill out the form.  I just need to know if I am allowed to submit the four figures I listed (as listed on my policy), considering I opted out of additional medical coverage on my Auto Insurance because I have Medicare.  The figures I mentioned seem like medical coverage, but I am not sure if IRS considers them so.

Enter any medical insurance premiums you paid that were not part of your Michigan auto policy in the Federal section of your return under Deductions & Credits, Medical.

The four other figures you mention in your post don't appear in this discussion thread.

If you enter the amounts you paid for medical insurance in the Federal section under Deductions and Credits, the amount should carry over to the Total Household Resources worksheet on your Michigan state return. Or, you can make these entries in the state interview section of the program to ensure they are applied to the MI Homestead Property Tax Credit calculation.

  1. Select State in the black panel on the left hand side of your screen when logged into TurboTax.
  2. This will take you to a screen titled Let's get your state taxes done right.  Click continue on this screen.
  3. You will see the screen titled Status of your state returns.  Select Edit/Continue to the right of Michigan to review your entries.
  4. If you have already started your tax return, you can select Edit to the right of Credits and taxes to review your entries as shown in the screen below.
  5. Be sure to select Homestead Property Tax Credit to review your information and enter your medical insurance premiums.

Michigan's homestead property tax credit is how the State of Michigan can help you pay some of your property taxes if you are a qualified Michigan homeowner or renter and meet the requirements. You should complete the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim MI-1040CR to see if you qualify for the credit.

The credit, for most people, is based on a comparison between property taxes and total household resources. Homeowners pay property taxes directly and renters pay them indirectly with their rent.

See this Michigan webpage for more information about the types of insurance to include in the calculation for the Homestead Property Tax Credit.
