or mainly what's on the W2 box 17 from last year.
(TurboTax asks, not QB)
I do taxes with TurboTax for years, why doesn't it collect the info from last year return by itself?
According to Turbo Tax, this is what you will report. Some of these may not apply in your case but these are some of the things that need to be reported. Property Tax is not included on this list. You can find this on your 2019 return.
- Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099
- Estimated tax payments for 2019
- Add any paid in 2020 for 2019 (it's common for the fourth quarterly payment to be made in January)
- Overpayment from 2018 applied toward your 2019 return
- Payments made with an extension of time to file
- Payments made when you filed your return
- Refundable credits
I am not certain why this didn't transfer over from last year except that Turbo Tax must be certain that you have all this information in your return in case if something was missed from last year.
Hi,
Since is says:
Add up any payments you made to your state or locality
- Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099
- Estimated tax payments for 2019
- Add any paid in 2020 for 2019 (it's common for the fourth quarterly payment)
I thought I should use the amount from 2019 Schedule A line 5d.
are you saying that I should only use only the state tax withheld 2019 w2 ?
(if I do not have W-2G, 1099 and State Estimated tax payments for 2019)
No, use any and all state withholding amounts. If you paid state taxes in more than one state, all state taxes paid should be included.
If you are a long term TurboTax user, you may have inadvertently used a different username with the same email and created a 2nd account. In order for your 2019 information to carry into 2020 properly, you need to be using the same username.
