What happens to unused funds in a HSA account in the following year if you don't elect a HDHP in the new year? Can you still use the funds to cover medical expenses?

Yes you can. But you can’t contribute to the HSA any longer.

You may use HSA funds to pay for qualified medical expenses for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents, even if you are no longer eligible to make contributions.
