What can I do about the Home Heating Credit? I sont qualify, but it won't let me file either.

What state are you referring to?

If you are preparing a Michigan return, please follow the steps below for the Home Heating Credit.  If you are referring to another state, please respond to this thread to let us know and we will post instructions for that state.

 

If you haven't finished going through your Michigan return:

1. Continue to the screen, Take a look at Michigan credits and taxes.
2. In the Personal, home, and family credits section, click the Start box next to Home Heating Credit.
3. Continue through the screens, entering the requested information.

If you have already gone through the Michigan return:

1. When you go back to the MI return, you will see the screen Your 2020 Michigan taxes are ready for us to check.
2. Click the Start box next to Credits and Taxes.
3. Continue to the screen, Take a look at Michigan credits and taxes.
4. In the Personal, home, and family credits section, click the Start box next to Home Heating Credit.
5. Continue through the screens, entering the requested information.

 

It depends. You can't receive a credit for this on your federal return but perhaps your state may have a provision for it.  You will need to check with your state's revenue website to see if you can receive a heating credit if you are a renter.
