W-2 doesn't list my HSA contributions in box 12, they are part of DD (Cost of Employer Sponsored Health Care)

TurboTax didn't pick up my HSA contributions in the HSA section, Should i just list them as contributions i made (during the interview)? or are they captured separately through line item DD in box 12 of the W-2?

Code DD is the non-taxable value of your HDHP, *not* your HSA contributions. Employer and pre-tax employee contributions to your HSA (the most common types) should be reported as a single total in Box 12 with code W; they should *NOT* be added to code DD. If your HSA contributions were made after-tax (either by payroll deduction or directly), they should not appear on your W-2. Those should appear on a Form 5498-SA from your HSA provider.

There is no code W in box 12 of my w-2 this year. I was told they added the HSA contributions and medical and dental pretax payroll deductions together in DD as they were part of a cafeteria plan. My HR and Payroll department confirmed this was correct when I questioned them both about it. Does that make sense?

Your employer prepared your W-2s incorrectly. Medical & dental premiums may be implicitly part of Code DD; but all employer & pre-tax employee HSA contributions should be reported as Code W, *NOT* Code DD. ("Cafeteria plan" is just what allows them to deduct those pre-tax.) Code DD is for health insurance, *NOT* HSAs.

Ok well since they don't believe they did it incorrectly they aren't going to reissue mine. How can I file correctly? Do I list the HSA contributions somewhere else? Or is it fine because they have come out pretax?

Contact the IRS for assistance. Your employer HSA contributions must appear with Code W for proper reporting.

Hi there, I know this thread is old but I'm having the exact same issue as you posted.

My W-2 only has box 12a code DD even though they deducted HSA to get to my net pay. I don't see any code W in box 12 and I don't think they subtracted my HSA contribution from box 1 of W-2.

Did you ever find a resolution for your question?

The resolution is the same for you now - you need to contact your employer to have them issue a corrected W-2.  HSA contributions made must be reported with the code W to be correct.  If your employer will not issue a corrected W2 you will need to contact the IRS.
