Upon Federal review, TurboTax is asking me to input a state SDA Special Depreciation Allowance on my car and truck expense worksheet. I am not sure what to do with this.

I am in South Carolina.

I would recommend not selecting the SDA if you are utilizing the standard mileage rate.

Me, too.  I didn't choose any Special Depreciation Allowance on any assets; but upon review, TurboTax is asking me for amounts.  How do I fix this?  I've gone back and looked at the assets, and I can't find any way to choose or opt out of SDA.

What is the state?  It may help us find the issue since some states depreciate differently from federal.

I am filing in Ohio and am having this same issue.  I have completed my entries but keep receiving a notice to enter AMT Special Depr Allow for a Dell Computer that I have not entered.  It will NOT allow me to move on, file or even somehow Opt Out of this entry.  Upon reviewing each entry I have made, I cannot find where this is entered.  HELP!

I’m in Oregon and having this same issue. The review of my federal tax return takes me to check the entry on ‘car and truck expense worksheet’, and tells me the ‘elect out of SDA’ should be left blank. There are 3 options to click on right in the review section: ‘no entry’, ‘elect out of SDA, yes’, and ‘elect out of SDA, no’.

But no matter which I choose here, it keeps making me review. And I can’t find anywhere in TurboTax during the normal course of filling out each section, where I can change the SDA option. Help please??

The Special Depreciation Allowance (SDA) is an automatic bonus depreciation that allows you to save money on your taxable income.  TurboTax is telling you not to elect out of SDA so you don't lose it.  The SDA goes on Form 4562.  If you don't want to take it, you can remove the form.  Here's how:

How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?

  • Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  • In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  • In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  • Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

Here are IRS instructions where you can find more details about the SDA.

You are reporting vehicle expenses and your state may not conform with the Special Depreciation Allowance on the state tax return.  The software wants to know whether you claimed a Special Depreciation Allowance on a vehicle.

If your vehicle claimed a Special Depreciation Allowance it would be reported in the column on Form 4562 Depreciation and Amortization Report.

In the online versions, you may view or print at Tax Tools / Print Center / Print, save or preview this year's return / Include government and TurboTax worksheets after you have paid for the software.

In the Desktop versions, one can look at the tax return by clicking FORMS, or by viewing the PDF through the Print Center.
