TurboTx won't let me leave boxes unchecked that don't apply to me on 2024 Form 8889. How do I get around this? Opened HSA in error and closed it within weeks.

I have $30 contributed on 2024 W-2 box 12, but closed HSA because I did not qualify for one. Turns out my plan was not a HDHP. Form 8889 Q1 and Q2 will not let me leave them blank. I'm afraid to put "none" for Q2 because I did have insurance all year and don't want to create another problem.

To clarify, when you closed the HSA account, did you have any earnings? Did you get a 1099-HSA for 2024.

I did not receive a 1099-HSA.  HR told me pretty quickly, it might have only been open for about 6-7 weeks. However, I also have not received my 1095-C like I had for 2023 to prove I have had insurance all year,  if it was to be questioned though. Thank you for you help!

You can go through the interview for the HSA under

Deductions & Credits

Medical

1099-SA, HSA, MSA   START or UPDATE

Select "Health Savings Account (HSA)" on the first "Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2024" screen

"Did you use it?" NO

"Did you inherit it?" NO

"Let's enter your HSA contributions" screen shows the $30 from the W-2, CONTINUE

"Did you employer tell you about any other contributions?" NO

"Did you have Medicare?" NO

"Were you covered by a HDHP?" NO

"Did you overfund in 2023?" NO

"You may want to withdraw money from your HSA."   "OK, I'll withdraw the full $30 excess contribution by April 15, 2025"

Continue and select "NONE if it asks if you had a HDHP at the end of the year.

That should be the end of it.
