Turbotax not updating to itemized deductions. This is the best option based me. Asking for 10b 1040-1040SR but not taking a standard deduction. How to update Turbotax?

Turbotax is telling me itemized is the best option based on my information.  And, I'm also selecting itemized.  However, an error Turbotax is bringing to my attention is putting in Charitable contributions for line 10b on 1040/1040SR Worksheet, but I shouldn't have to fill in that line because I'm not taking the standard deduction.  Any thoughts on how to get Turbotax to update?

You are correct, if you are taking the itemized deductions, the amount on line 10b should be blank.

I recommend reviewing your input to ensure the amounts are reported in the correct area.

Log into your TurboTax program.

  1. Select Federal in the black panel on the left
  2. Select Deductions & Credits at the top of the screen
  3. Scroll down to All Tax Breaks and select Charitable Donations
  4. Select Start to the right of Donations to Charity in 2020
  5. Proceed to enter the details of your charitable cash contribution by entity as applicable in this section.
  6. Once you have completed entering your details, select Done with Charitable Donation
  7. Scroll down to Wrap up tax breaks
  8. Continue through the screens until you see a page titled Based on what you just told us...deductions is best for you

If your screen does not show the itemized deduction as shown in the example above, you may need to review your input.

The charitable contribution screen should no longer show up.  You may get an error message in the federal review.  If that happens, simply delete the input for the charitable contributions and the error will go away.

Turbotax automatically puts $300 on line 10B even though I am itemizing. When I delete the $300 manually, Turboxtax says an error (yes their error) and will not let me efile.  I see lots of comments, but no solutions for itemizers.

Use the following method to delete:

  1. Make sure that you are itemizing deductions  instead of taking the standard deduction.
  2. Go to federal>deductions and credits.
  3. Continue through the screens, until you reach a screen that says the standard/itemize deductions are right for you.
  4. If this screen says the standard deduction is right for you, check the box that says change my deduction. This will change to itemize.  Then a popup will appear showing you the difference between the Standard deduction amount and the itemized amount.
  5. The very next screen will allow you to erase the 300 amount. Here is what the deduction page looks like that I described above.

Thank you.  The deduction page as an example was not in your email.  I am not using Turbotax online; I have the CD for Deluxe. Steps 4 & 5 of your email are not the same as my screens.  By going through the completed return again "You've Chosen Itemized Deductions, Change My Deduction, Itemized deductions of XXX, " and with line 10b overridden with 0, I was allowed to efile with the correct amount owed based on itemized deduction without an addition amount of charitable deduction on line 10b.  After (and hopefully not during) efiling, Turbotax changed the return back to include a deduction for line 10b in addition to the itemized deductions.  I am very disappointed that this programming error has not been corrected considering all the chatter about it on your website.  Based on the refund displayed on the screen during the efiling, I am hoping that line 10b was 0 on the return as it should be for an itemizer.
