TurboTax isn’t prompting for entering FTC carryover from prior years

  • I paid foreign taxes for tax year 2024.
  • TurboTax calculated about 1/3 of it for FTC.
  • I have lots of FTC carryover from prior tax years (2021, 2022, 2023).
  • I am unsure whether for this tax year (2024) I can use any amount from the prior years carryovers.
  • So, I was hoping that TurboTax would help me calculate that.
  • But it never prompts for entering those carryovers or asking about them.

How can I make TuboTax (Deluxe) "interview" me about this?

There is no way to make TurboTax generate an interview for this section.  But here are steps to help you enter this information into your tax return to ensure it is utilized if you are eligible to take the carryover credit.

  1. First, log back into TurboTax.
  2. Select the Deductions & Credits section.
  3. Scroll down to the section titled Estimates and Other Taxes Paid and in this section, select Start/Update to the right of Foreign Taxes.
  4. On the screen titled "Foreign Tax Credit," select yes when asked "Did you pay foreign taxes in 2024 or have credits to use from a prior year?"
  5. Proceed through the screens and answer the questions as it applies to your tax return until you see the screen titled "Foreign Tax Credit Carryovers."  Enter your prior year carryover amounts by year on this screen.  Select continue.

Your entries here will then flow into your tax return and if you are entitled to use any of them, TurboTax will preform that calculation and include it as applicable.

Thanks @JotikaT2 for this excellent clear answer.

The boxes for years 2021, 2022, 2023 were already populated (correctly), so there was nothing for me to enter. I was expecting same boxes for 2024 but apparently TurboTax automatically determines those values and whether anything from prior years could be used.

Upon checking the

Forms

view (

Sch B Form 1116, 1116 Comp Wks

), I see that indeed this is the case: FTC for tax year 2024 is again maxed out, so nothing from prior years could be applied.
