I entered the purchase in the correct form. It's my understanding the only reason I wouldn't qualify is AMT, which isn't an issue for me. Is there a TurboTax issue given this is a new credit due to IRA last year?
The IRS Form 8911 Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit will not be finalized and is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 02/02/2023
Go to this TurboTax support FAQ for federal and state forms availability - https://form-status.app.intuit.com/tax-forms-availability/formsavailability?albRedirect=true&product=Turbotax_online&bu=cg
Ok, got it. TurboTax is usually pretty good at letting us know when form isn't finalized or ready. I didn't see any such notification here. Thanks for the quick reply.
Any forms or schedules included in your tax return that are not yet finalized will be shown in the Review section of the program.
I have same issue using Deluxe in Windows. The link shows the form now available but calculates to 0 despite the Inflation Reduction Act extension of the credit, I do not want to refile my taxes at a later date. Review in deluxe does not show 8911 now as missing. Still think 2/2/2023 is the issue?
Please be aware that the EV credit is up to the amount of your federal liability. If there is no income tax no credit would be available in the current year.
if you bought a new, qualified plug-in electric vehicle (EV) in 2022 or before, you may be eligible for a clean vehicle tax credit of up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D.
The credit equals:
The maximum credit is $7,500. It is non-refundable, so you can't get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. You can't apply any excess credit to future tax years.

Credits for New Electric Vehicles
Thanks for the response. To be clear, the question is about the Alternative Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, not the EV Vehicle credit.
The form appears to be available now, but the credit isn't being accurately calculated, at least not for me. I am still waiting on some additional forms to be provided so I have a few weeks before I file. I just hope this gets sorted by mid-February.
Yes, this about the EV Charger credit and not the vehicle credit. I have a tax due and the credit would apply per IRS rulings, the issue is TurboTax now shows from 8911 available but it only calculates to zero. In my case I should have a $350 credit applied to my taxes. I do not want to file and then have to amend. I am using windows Deluxe
There are a couple of things that can cause the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit to be reduced to zero.
As you know, the credit is non-refundable and you must have a tax liability to take advantage of the credit. Also, the calculation of possible Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) is involved in the calculation of the credit and may reduce it to zero. Since you have a tax liability check for the second cause of not receiving a credit in the next paragraph.
There is a tentative minimum tax for AMT that is calculated in the background as your return is completed. Form 8911 compares that tentative minimum tax to the net regular tax after certain other credits have been taken into account. If the tentative minimum tax is greater than the net regular tax, then the Form 8911 credit is disallowed.
Take a look at your Form 8911, lines 16, 17, and 18. If line 17 is greater than line 16, then your personal credit for Form 8911 will be disallowed.
Thanks again for your reply. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't seem to get to the "raw" tax form. I keep getting redirected to the TurboTax wizard which hides the actual line numbers from me.
From what I can see at this point AMT isn't a problem for me this year, but I'm not sure how to see the "tentative" AMT that you mention. Any advice on that?
Thx again
The tentative minimum tax is listed on line 9 of Form 6251 Alternative Minimum Tax - Individuals. If you are using the online TurboTax program, you will be able to see the form only when you are done paying for your TurboTax program, when all of your forms will be available for view. @chaltrye
Thank you for the additional information. I typically wait until I file to pay, but I just took care of that now. I downloaded my in-progress return (still waiting on a few 1099's before I file), and I don't show any AMT (in fact no 6251 form), and I also don't show the Form 8911. I would have thought there would be an IRS or TurboTax form or worksheet showing the information and why it was not allowed. But there is nothing. Well, I have a total of 102 forms and worksheets, just not a 6251 nor a 8911.
Any additional thoughts? I'm hoping this gets ironed out in the new few weeks when I'm ready to file.
Thx
Even though you have some tax due, this credit is limited to the amount of regular income tax on line 16 of your 1040 or 1040-SR. You may have a tax liability due to self-employment tax and still not get a refund for this credit.
Assuming you do have a number greater than zero on line 16, you should review the basic eligibility for the credit and what you have entered in TurboTax:
Credit Requirements
The following conditions must be met to qualify for this credit:
- You started using the station in the current tax year (2022).
- You are the original owner of the station.
- The station is used primarily in the United States.
- The station is installed at your main home or business location.
If this credit is for business use, your credit will appear on Form 3800, General Business Credit, instead of Form 8911.
Thanks for the reply Julie.
So I'm at a bit of a loss here... I owe plenty of tax, I'm not in AMT, and I meet all the qualification criteria for the credit. I'm also claiming a credit for a new EV I purchased last year (hence the reason I've installed the charger). That credit ($7500) is showing up as expected on my return. But this AV refueling credit is still showing 0.
Could there be an issue with TurboTax itself (dare I use the term 'bug')? That's my assumption right now as everything else is pointing to the fact that I apparently qualify for the credit but yet am not receiving it on my return.
Note that I have not yet filed as I am still waiting on a few additional unrelated forms to be updated, as well as a few 1099's.
Any other ideas? I'm also curious if any other community members are seeing the same behavior.
Thx
Are you claiming the credit for your main home, or for a business?
Form 8911 is generated properly in TurboTax desktop (screenshot).
In my TTO test return, under Tax Tools > Tools, click 'View Tax Summary' then in the left-side menu, choose 'Preview my 1040'. Scroll down to Schedule 3, Line 6j to see the credit (screenshot). So it appears the credit is calculating, even though I can't actually see Form 8911 (haven't paid for test return).
Here's more info on Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.
Interesting. I'm am using TTO, and I'm not seeing the credit on the 1040 (just blank). In fact, I'm not even getting a 8911 form generated, even though I enter all the details on the appropriate screen (and the details show up when I go back to the screen). I really have no idea what is going on here.
When you say you have a tax liability, are you subtracting credits listed on schedule 3?
So looking at your 1040, it would be line 16 less line 20, although there could also be some other adjustments.
Yes, if I understand what you are asking, my line 16 is much larger than line 20. So I have a tax liability. I'm trying to reduce it with this credit 😉
You mentioned that there is no Form 6251 for Alternative Minimum Tax included with your return. However, there is a tentative AMT number that is calculated in the background and will be shown on Form 8911 where the Alternative Vehicle Refueling Property Credit is calculated.
Take a look at Form 8911, lines 16, 17, and 18. If line 17 is greater than line 16, then your credit is disallowed.
If you find that this is not the problem and you need further assistance to understand why the credit is being disallowed, you can provide us with a diagnostic copy of your tax file. The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms. To do so, follow the instructions below and post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using in a follow-up thread.
Use these steps if you are using TurboTax Online:
If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, use these steps:
Hi,
I am not even seeing a Form 8911, that's part of my issue. I'm entering the data for the credit but no form is even being created.
I have followed your instructions regarding the diagnostic copy. I am using TurboTax Online and the token number is: 1060021.
Thanks again for your assistance.
Hello.
1060033 is my code.
Could you explain why i'm not able to get any personal credit on my EV charging station? I'm having the same problem as everyone else, thanks!
Thank you for providing your token numbers. I was able to take a closer look at your returns using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax. There are some additional tools available in those versions of TurboTax that are not available when using TurboTax Online. There is an ability to look at forms that may have been filled out, but will not be included as part of the tax return because they are not needed.
That is exactly the case for Form 8911 on both of your returns. When looking at Form 8911, the amounts reported on lines 16 and 17 explain why you are not eligible to claim the credit. Line 17 (tentative minimum tax) is greater than line 16 (net regular tax). As mentioned before, when this is the case, the credit is disallowed regardless of whether you are subject to Alternative Minimum Tax or not.
This situation is outlined in the IRS Instructions for Form 8911 if you care to read more.
Even though Form 8911 will not be included as part of your tax return because the credit is disallowed, you should be able to specify Form 8911 to be printed or previewed from the Print Center using TurboTax Online to take a look at the details.
