Do you need to fill out F1116 or can you use the exemption?
I have the same question and am following this post. In my case, I chose in the interview to do F1116 rather than the exemption.
I have the same question. My financial institution did not provide any information for any sub-part to block 6, including block 6d, yet there is an amount in block 6. The IRS does not mention anything about sub-parts to block 6 in the Form 1099-DIV either (<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-div-dividends-and-distributions">https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-div-dividends-and-distributions</a>).
New for 2017 is the following flaw: If there is an entry in 1099-DIV box 6, TT will immediately and incorrectly require an entry in box 6d and will mark it as an error until an amount is entered. Box 6d is “the foreign source amount included in dividends.” If F1116 is filled out, there is a screen to input that amount which TT will insert into box 6d and thus clear the error. If F1116 is not filled out because the user elects to use the exemption or the deduction, then bring up the 1099-DIV worksheet and type a zero into box 6d to remove the error.
This helps but I haven't solved it yet. I assume that F1116 was generated when I did the interview about Foreign Tax Credit, but I'm still getting the error. How do I check the F1116 to make sure that it is correct? And if F1116 requires a "box d" answer, I haven't been provided that information by my financial institution.
If you went through the F1116 interview, what did you enter into the screen that prompted you for the foreign source amount?
Nothing. It never asked that question at all until I was at the very end doing a final review and then it flagged the box on Schedule B. That was the first I had heard the phrase "foreign source amount" although "foreign tax paid" was imported from my financial institution on the 1099-DIV box 6.
If the foreign tax paid is no greater than $300 filing single or $600 married filing jointly, then you qualify for the exemption. If that is the case, I suggest restarting and I can forward the technique..
Where do you find F1116? Filing jointly was $300, how do you do the exemption?
I also am below the $600 cutoff for filing jointly and think that I should be able to take the tax credit without filing 1116 per the attached IRS instructions. But I don't know how to get TT to do it. <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1116.pdf">https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1116.pdf</a>
To ensure a clean start, delete F1116.
Go to the foreign tax credit interview and when you
start, here are the screen headers and the responses.
1. Foreign tax credit
Continue
2. Tell us about your foreign taxes.
Skip the foreign tax credit.
3. Foreign Taxes
Continue
TT will exit the interview and the credit should appear on line 48 of the 1040.
Make sure that the 1099-div box 6d has a zero in it.
Shouldn't we NOT be deleting the foreign taxes paid in box 6 since it's being reported to the IRS? I chose to take the credit ($11 in my case)
I would assume that we would look at our 1099DIV summary form and look for the amount of "Foreign dividends." My form shows Foreign Dividends of $39.37 and foreign tax paid on dividends of $10.74. The $10.74 is showing up in Box 6 correctly, so I figured I should put the $39.37 for "Foreign source amount included in dividends" Correct me if I'm wrong?
Hey rogge1722, I'm wondering why you are suggesting for people to delete foreign taxes paid in box 6. I wasn't sure if that is allowed/supposed to be removed because I'm doing a credit later?
Sorry I misread. You suggest to put a zero in box 6d. Should users be putting in the foreign dividend amount there or zero?
Either will do. All box 6d needs is not be vacant. Any entry will do and a zero is the easiest.
So, this workaround gets TT to stop issuing an error. But it's not clear that the final tax return forms accurately reflect the situation. Is a software patch being released to fix this error?
I am having the same problem as everyone else with the “the foreign source amount included in dividends.” This problem only comes up when TT does the state tax review and it will ask for the foreign source amount in 6d, I did enter zero and the problem was solved but is this really the correct fix? I would like to calculate the the foreign source amount but from all the googling I've done on the subject I'm still confused.
This is how it works. If you filled out f1116, there is a screen asking for foreign sourced income. When you type in an amount, it is sent to the 1099-div box 6d. From there, it is copied to the f1116 worksheet. From there it is copied to f1116 itself. Now since there is no f1116 and no f1116 worksheet, it is useless. Thus you could type in box 6d any amount and it will go nowhere. It was properly vacant in TY 2016 and earlier.
