Third stimulus check for my 2021 born child

Hello,

I am very confused about how to claim the third stimulus check for my child who was born at the beginning of 2021. I checked the eligibility and he is qualify for the check but during the process Turbo Tax never asked if my child has got it. (The program did ask about my wife and I but not my child).  Any advise on how to fix this? Thank you in advance.

Yes,

The TurboTax program will ONLY ask what you and/or your spouse received. Checks are not sent to children and the IRS Letter 6475 only reports what you and/or your spouse received, including amounts paid for your children/dependents.

When you enter the newborn as a dependent on your return, the TurboTax program will compute the amount of Stimulus payment to include that new dependent. Next, you enter what you and your wife already received. The amount received is subtracted from the total and you get the difference on your return.

Please look at your 1040 line 30 to view what was added to your return for the stimulus payment you did not get in regards to the new child.

To view the 1040

Click Tax Tools on the left side bar

Click Tools from the drop-down

Click "View Tax Summary" on the TOOLS CENTER screen

Thanks for the reply. The line 30 doesn't include the 1400 for my child. I tried to delete my child's information and enter them again but it didn't work.

Did you enter the correct amount of stimulus you received. TurboTax will show you what you should have received and will ask if the amount is correct. There should be a $1,400 difference between that amount and what you got.

Check the stimulus screen.

To get to the stimulus section in TurboTax online:

  • Type "stimulus" in Search in the upper right
  • Select "Jump to stimulus"
  • TurboTax will ask whether the amount your eligible for matches what you got.
  • If it doesn't, say NO
  • TurboTax will let you enter what you got

Yes you should get the Recovery rebate credit for a baby born in 2021.  See IRS question 8

2021 Recovery Rebate Credit — Topic C: Eligibility for claiming a Recovery Rebate Credit on a 2021 tax return | Internal Revenue Service

Be sure you said the new baby lived with you the WHOLE YEAR!  Go back and check that under My Info.  Maybe delete the baby and re add him

If you had a child born in 2021- Add them under My Info. You need to answer 2 questions…..

Did your child live with you for the whole year? Answer YES even if they were born late in the year (even on Dec 31).

Then was at least half of child's expenses paid by CHILD? Usually is NO.

If you qualify the 1,400 Recovery rebate credit will be on line 30 and either increase a refund or reduce a tax due.

You also should get the Child Tax Credit 3,600 for them on line 28.

Before filing,  You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/accessing/help/how-do-i-preview-my-turbotax-online-return-before-filing/00/26160

If you did not get prompted to enter your stimulus information, that means you either:

  1. Filed as a dependent being claimed on another tax return, or
  2. have an AGI too high to claim the recovery rebate

To get to the stimulus questions in TurboTax at any time, you can search for stimulus and use the Jump to link.  If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.
