Switch from dependent to independent

Spoiler

I recently filed my taxes and everything went fine. Unfortunately I made a slight mistake and named myself a dependent as someone else (My parents) when I am an independent. My tax return was filed and accepted as were my parents who filed but didn't claim me as a dependent. Do I need to file an amendment to change my status? Or because my parents didn't claim me I shouldn't even bother?

If no one is claiming you as a dependent, you need to amend you return to un-check the box that you can be claimed by someone else.

If your return is accepted, wait until your return has been fully processes and you received your refund ( if you are expecting a refund ), then amend your return.

Here's how you amend your return:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents , select 2019 and then Amend (change) return
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Follow the instructions, your refund or tax due will change to 0. This is normal on amended returns.

Amended return can't be e-file, you need to print it and mail it in.
