Schedule A: Tax and Interest Deduction Worksheet

Hello,

While trying to complete my taxes, I was flagged for an error on the Schedule A Tax and Interest Deduction Worksheet, specifically line A2 - Home Mortgage interest and points reported on Form 1098.

A little background - I refinanced my home mortgage in 2021, and used the excess funds to purchase a vacation property. There were no points associated with my loan. I answered all questions that TurboTax asked. I am likely taking the standard deduction. What am I supposed to put in the box A2? Why is TurboTax making me fill out Schedule A if I am taking the Standard Deduction?

Yes, you will likely need to get rid of all those form entries.  You have two options:

1.  Go back to the "Deductions and Credits" section and edit the "Mortgage Interest" topic.  You will need to delete all entries there.

2. Delete the Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet(s) using the forms mode in Desktop versions or these steps in online versions.

1. Select "Tax Tools" in the left hand menu
2. Select "Tools"
3. Select "Delete a Form"
4. Find each of the "Home Mortgage Interest Worksheets"
5. "Delete"
6. "Confirm Deletion"

If you are going to use the Standard Deduction, then you don't need to fill out Schedule A.  You can delete the answer(s) that are causing the error.  Instead of answering the rest of the questions, just click on another section in the menu on the left hand side of your screen.

Thanks David. It's forcing me to add something to the box. Am I able to just add 0? Or delete the form somehow?

I used turbo tax CD purchased from Costco.  I used itemize deduction for deductions and credits.  My mortgage interest $6,376 is not reflected in the total itemized deductions for 2022 from section of Here Are Your 2021 and 2022 Deductions & Credits Section.  How can I fix to reflect my mortgage interest 2022.

Double-check in the mortgage interest section of your return that you did indicate that the interest is 'secured by a property' that you own.  If this is answered 'no' instead of 'yes', then the mortgage interest is not deducted.

Use the following steps to go back to that section:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “mortgage interest” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to mortgage interest
  • Click on the blue “Jump to mortgage interest” link

Still would not let me delete the form. After deleting the form, it would just readd it. Extremely frustrating. I will not be using TurboTax next year.
