I can't find the Line 5 Worksheet for Schedule 8812 anywhere in my TurboTax output. Under File \ Print, I selected the option to have TurboTax generate "Tax Return, all calculation worksheets". There is no Line 5 worksheet to be found anywhere.
The worksheet is used to determine the child tax credit amount based on income limitations, so it's a key worksheet to have available.
I agree that I cannot find the "Line 5 Worksheet" in TurboTax. I have passed this along. In the meantime, this is the form.
See page 4 of 2021 Instructions for Schedule 8812
I have reached out and we would like to open an investigation into this issue, but I will need your help to do it.
We would like to take a deeper look at this. However, we need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
TurboTax Online:
I'm not using the Turbotax Online version. I'm using the Windows desktop Premier version. I created the file from my desktop version and sent it. The token number is: 956783.
While I have your attention, I would like to alert you to a far more critical problem with a form generated by Turbotax Premier desktop relates to child tax credits as well. It's form 2441 Child and Dependent Care Expenses. The form has incorrect numbers in some of the fields. Look at a post titled "Entering rollover dependent FSA information for 2021". I responded to this post on 3/13/2021 and put the details of the error I am finding in this form. In a nutshell, Turbotax is incorrectly including forfeited FSA benefits in Line 2(c) and not reducing the dependent care credit amount in Line 30 by the FSA benefits used from Line 28. The diagnostic file I sent in also has this incorrect form in it.
I called Turbotax Customer Service (3/13/2022) on the issue with form 2441 and got absolutely nowhere with the person. She basically told me to file the incorrect form generated by Turbotax and let the IRS correct it if they think its wrong. Woah, I can't believe that type of advise is coming out of Intuit. Their culture needs to change.
Yeah - no Line 5 worksheet! This is just 1 of the many mistakes this program has in it. It is ridiculous that TurboTax is leaving us all wondering if our returns are correct and/or missing information and they still have the guts to charge for this program. Additionally, they deleted CPA help for the desktop version without really letting us know until after purchase of the program. You don't find out until you ask for that help! They offer "technical" help from agents who usually don't know the answer. So they have errors in the software causing us problems with no way to fix them except this rambling support site! After you enter items like cash contributions and you THINK you have done what is necessary, the program doesn't even enter it in the final form. Unless you are fairly experienced with doing your taxes, and check them over very carefully, you probably won't even notice that you did not get any deduction for those contributions - THANKS TURBOTAX. We all need to find a new program next year and they should issue everyone a refund for the cost of this messy piece of software :(
To put it bluntly, asking someone to provide you with their tax return so you can fix your program is OUTRAGEOUS.
There is a schedule .... 8812
On that form, it says complete line 5 worksheet. TurboTax is generating the number. When you right click on the number, typically TurboTax will allow you to click to the data source. That link is grayed out. The information you get when click on "about Line 5 Wksht" is goble-d-**bleep** and worthless.
I am having the same problem with the missing worksheet on schedule 8812. I need my line 4a to say 3 and it says 2 . I can override it but then I can't file electronically. Has this problem been resolved yet?
Taxes are soon due and this is an immediate need. Really? How do we obtain the schedule 8812 line 5 worksheet output? Seems this was missed by Intuit, and in your requirements and QA/testing. This is incompetence. Do you know the tax forms?
I just did my daughters tax return. She has 2 kids under age of 6. Turbo tax calculates the credit to be $7,200. I too attempted to verify numbers by looking for the Line 5 worksheet. there is not one. I manually calculated the worksheet and the correct number should be $4,000. That is a $3,200 error! This is unacceptable
you can find the instructions for schedule 8812 on the IRS.gov website and you will find the line 5 worksheet in there. You will need to calculate manually.
I did and found my Turbo Tax schedule to be incorrect.
Look at worksheet 5 again - I thought the same thing you did. But a post earlier in this thread revealed my error (and I think it is yours too).
Look at line 9 of worksheet 5 - subtract Line 8 of the worksheet from line 3 of form 8812. If you did what I did, you subtracted line 9 of the worksheet from line 3 of the worksheet. When I used line 3 of form 8812, I got the same number as Turbo Tax - which was 7150 versus 4000
The IRS just sent me a message telling me that my Schedule 8812 Line 5 calculation (done by Turbotax) was incorrect. FYI. Looks like I'm out $2,000?
Same thing here...how can I find out where the supposed "error" was if the worksheet doesn't exist?
I'm filling out the form at https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/how-do-i-submit-a-claim-under-the-turbotax-100-accurate-calculation-guarantee-or-100-accurate-expert/00/26065 because this absolutely looks like a turbo tax issue.
Found out the hard way as well. Got a notice from the IRS on this.
TurboTax, please be better prepared next year.
I have received an CP11 from the IRS indicating I owe because of an incorrect calculation of child tax credits. Turbotax did not provide the Line 5 worksheet to correctly calculate the 8812 and due this, I'm now told I owe in $3009 in tax and penalties. What is my recourse for this Turbotax mistake/shortcoming?
I filed the form at https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/how-do-i-submit-a-claim-under-the-turbotax-1... and uploaded the notice from the IRS. Turbo Tax will cover the fees and interest due to an error like this, but they won't cover the difference in tax. (It kind of sucks...but I understand that policy).
Even though my interest was only $2.93, I still filed the form - because Turbo Tax needs to know that they messed up here...it's not about the money - but hopefully, it causes enough work on their end to "make it right" that they'll be careful in future releases.
Thanks for the reply - I was worried about that. So, I've filed a claim as well but you're saying I'll get the penalty reimbursed - $192 vs. the full $3,000? Really frustrating and painful - especially because it took me less than 5 minutes to complete the Line 5 form manually but after the fact.
Yup, just got a notice today as well! As did a family member who also used TurboTax. Ridiculous!!
@KarenCPA - the error everyone appears to be making on these board is that the amount entered when prompted by TT for the Advance Child Tax credit does not match the IRS records. Taxpauers are entering a number than is LESS THAN what the IRS has in its records, which has the effect of inflating refunds.
That difference is reduced by the IRS which has the effect of reducing the refund to the correct number.
please review Line 28 of your tax return which is calculated as follows:
1) $3600 for each child under 6 PLUS
2) $3000 for each child ages 6-17
3) LESS the amount received from the IRS from July - December, 2021. How much did you receive? do not do this from memory - find the documenation!
1) and 2) are automatically calculated by TT based on your dependents and the birthdates entered
3) is a manual input. Refer to Letter 6419 (and if you are filing joint there were TWO letters that needed to be added together) Or review your bank account records from July - Dec, 2021 (the 15th of each month). THis is where many made the mistake of not accurately entering what they actually received
does that help?
I just had this same thing happen! When filing in April I was told turbo tax would fill out the "line 5 worksheet" to have me get my other half($1800) of the child tax credit. When calling back today, they said there is no extra form that turbo tax fills out for someones taxes. There was no form generated to fill this in and now A LOT of people are out the second half(or entire) amount of their child tax credit. Also when I called I was told no one else was having this same issue with their taxes....
@mgold1313 - go back to the interview questions in TT related to the Advance Child Tax Credit. TT asks how much you had already received and referenced Letter 6419.
Based on your response to what you had already received, TT is able to calculate the CHild Tax Credit.
Look on Line 28 of form 1040.... what is there?
it should be $3600 times the number of children under 6 PLUS $3000 times the number of children 6-17 years old LESS what you told TT you already received.
if you entered a number you already received that was less than the IRS knows it sent you, the IRS adjusted your tax return for the difference, so that your tax return matched the IRS records. The result was a lower refund / more tax owed.
Check your bank statements for July - Dec, 2021 to review what you actually received. The direct deposits occured right around the 15th of each month.
does that help?
