Residential clean energy credit

Can I claim the credit for the solar system and lithium battery bank I had installed on my 5th wheel camper? We lived in it for over 5 months last year. If so, what address should I use as we stayed at various locations across the USA.

Yes, a camper as long as it has cooking facilities and a bathroom and sleeping quarters can be used to claim the solar credits.

As for the address, you would just need to use the address where it is primarily parked.

The Residential Energy Credit is also a non-refundable credit, however this one can be carried forward to future tax years until this credit goes away which is currently set to happen in 2034

This credit is worth up to 30% of the cost of the equipment, with no maximum limit.  The items that fall into this category are as follows:

  • Geothermal Heat Pumps
  • Small Wind Turbines
  • Solar Energy Systems
  • Fuel Cells
  • Battery Storage Technology

To qualify

  • The product must be installed on a home you live in, whether it is your first or second home
  • You must have purchased the product new.  It cannot be used

To enter these credits into TurboTax take the following steps:

  • Federal
  • Deductions and Credits
  • I'll Choose what I work on
  • Home Energy Credits which is under the "Your Home" category
