Received IRS notice about 1099-C for a debt that was discharged in Ch 7 - Form 982 necessary?

We received a notice from the IRS about a 1099-C they say was filed on 04/30/2017 on an amount that was discharged in bankruptcy on 08/11/2015. We do not have a copy of the 1099-C. Do we still need to amend our 2017 return and file a form 982? If so, where can we find user-friendly instructions on how to file this form correctly? Thank you for any advice!

if you do nothing the IRS will include this in income, don't know your 2017 tax situation so don't know what effect this would have.  I would say you're better off amending.

here's a link to form 982 instructions.  if you don't understand them you can post your questions back in this thread.  it may be difficult to give a proper answer because we don't  have any info. you might be better off seeing a pro.
