If your mortgage lender is paying your property tax from an escrow account--which is very common---the property tax paid in 2023 will be on the 1098 your lender issued to you. If you are not paying from your mortgage lender, then you will need to check your own banking records and your property tax bill(s) to see when and how much you paid.
Go to Federal> Deductions and Credits> Your Home to enter mortgage interest, property taxes, and loan origination fees (“points”) that you paid in 2023. You should have a 1098 from your mortgage lender that shows this information. Lenders send these in January/early February.
I have a 1098 from my lender and the property taxes are supposed to be paid out of my escrow, but I am unsure where on the 1098 the property taxes are stated. Is it box 10 Other taxes paid YTD?
Thanks.
Yes, check box 10.
Box 10. Other: Lenders enter any other item they wish to report to the payer, such as real estate taxes, insurance paid from escrow, or, if they are a collection agent, the name of the person for whom they collected the interest.
If you’re unsure, call your lender and ask.
