Payment with 2024 extension isn't reflected in taxes due/refund box

I filed an extension for my 2024 taxes with payment. Turbotax H&B 2024 is not deducting the payment amount from owed taxes as if no payment is on the extension. I also made a payment with my extension for State taxes; that one shows up against what I owed. I can change the State payment amount and it will change the amount in the State taxes refund/owed box. But the Federal one doesn't make any changes. Is there another place in TurboTax that the payment with extension (Federal) should be entered to be correctly reflected?

You can post the payment directly in TurboTax

 Select Tax Tools

  • You may have to minimize both the Federal and State options by clicking the Down Arrows on the Sidebar.
  • You will then clearly see Tax Tools
  • Click the arrow to up to see additional options
  1. Once you can work on Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. There will be 3 or 4 green boxes
  4. Select Topics Search
  5. Type Estimated
  6. Select Estimated Payments [GO]
  7. Scroll down and select Payment with Extension
  8. Continue through the interview.

I had the same issue --- I tried the recommended use of tax tools, but my payment is already accurately reflected on form 4868 Part II, but does not flow thru to the calculation on my 1040 or the "Federal Tax Due" counter at the top.  What am I missing?  Thanks!

If your extension payment did not automatically show up on your 1040 or state return you need to enter it.  So make sure it's not already there before you enter it!

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

Federal Extension payments should be on scheduled 3 line 10. And go to 1040 line 31.

Thank you for your quick response!

I followed your instructions; I had already entered this information where you indicated, however, it does not flow thru to Schedule 3 line 10.  I tried to add on the form (and override) and TT does not allow it.   Thus it is also not on 1040 line 31.

Should it have flowed thru to the Tax Payment Worksheet #9?  There was $0 in this field, but I was able to override with the actual payment made and then it appropriately updated Schedule 3 line 10 and 1040 line 31.  Maybe a TT bug that it didn't flow thru from the step by step prompt for the extension payment?

TypicaL  Thew "Help" is useless as the suggestions do not resemble - in ANY way - the reality of the latest version of Turbotax!  I can't find the suggested Tax Tools to see if the user suggestion works to make Form 4868 calculations flow correctly to form 1040!

Also, AGAIN this year, the Form 34868 is designed so poorly that it can't be used!  I says to tick Box B to force the Form 48o68 to flow to Form 1040 but there is - as usual - NO BOX B to tick - only Box A

THis suggestion cannot be used in the latest version of turbo/tax as there is NO Tax Tools option given
