On form 8889, can I still put $3850 under item #3 even though I was hired in May 2023 and have only been enrolled in HSA since then?

Yes, although please read the rest of this answer.

1. The instructions for line 3 of the 8889 say "2. If the last-month rule (see Last-month rule, earlier) applies, you are considered an eligible individual for the entire year. You are treated as having the same HDHP coverage for the entire year as you had on the first day of the last month of your tax year." Since you had HDHP coverage on December 1, 2023 (at least I assume you did), then you are using the last-month rule, so the full annual HSA contribution limit of $3,850 can be entered on line 3 (8889).

2. Why are you asking if you can enter this on line 3? Are you trying to enter it manually? You should go through the interview process and let TurboTax fill everything in. Overriding values in Forms mode can invalidate your Accuracy Guarantee and make e-filing not work.

If you are just doublechecking what TurboTax did, then kudos to you because we want an educated customer.

Ah good to know! And yes I was just double checking the pre-filled form. Thank you for your help!
