My wife and I get some monthly Social Security payments from a foreign country. Where do we enter this income in the form?

Income from a foreign pension or foreign "social security" is taxable and must be reported.

To report the foreign retirement income on Form 1040, Line 8, in TurboTax Online:

  • Go to Federal Taxes
  • Wages & Income
  • Scroll down (click on Add More Income, if showing)
  • Scroll down to Less Common Income and click on Show More
  • Next to "Other reportable income" click on Start
  • Answer Yes to "Any Other Taxable Income?"
  • Enter a description, such as "Country X Social Security", the amount, and click on Continue

You can also search for other reportable income using the search feature to be taken to that screen.....Answer NO to the question about ''did you receive other WAGES that were not reported on a w-2 or 1099''.

I have a question regarding social security from Japan.   I went to Wages & Income, Less Common Income, but I can't fine the "Show More" in my turbo tax.

Is this the right place to enter my social security from Japan?

Do I have to enter it for other place?

Yes, you will report your Foreign Social Security income under Other Taxable Income.

Are you using TurboTax CD/Download?

  1. Go to Wages and Expenses.
  2. Select I'll choose what I work on
  3. Scroll down to the Less Common Income section
  4. Scroll down to Miscellaneous Income
  5. Select Other reportable income>start
  6. Next screen asks Any Other Taxable Income, select Yes
  7. The next screen will allow you to report the income with a brief explanation.
