My state wages are significantly higher than my federal wages. Why would that happen? I did not contribute to retirement, hsa, fsa, etc.

Check your W-2 Form.

 

If there are significant differences between Box 1 - Wages and Box 16, State wages, you may need to contact your employer.  

 

Any adjustments that could potentially affect the numbers would be listed in boxes 12a-12d.
