My husband is a teacher. Can we take the $250 educator deduction if we're also taking the standard deduction? If so, how & where would I enter that?

Yes, your husband can still take an Educator Expense deduction of up to $250, even if you take the standard deduction.

To enter the Educator's Expenses in TurboTax:

  • Open (continue) your return in TurboTax Online.
  • Click My Account (top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type teacher.
  • In the results box, highlight teacher classroom expenses, then click GO.
  • You'll land on the Teacher Expenses page, which asks Did you spend your own money as a teacher in 2016? Click Yes
  • Enter your Teacher Expenses and click Continue. TurboTax will display Your Teacher Expenses Summary. (Click the series of screenshots below to enlarge them for reference.)

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
