My husband became a real estate agent in 2016, but didn't earn any money, but paid dues and continuing education fees. Can we deduct those/ or a portion from our taxes?

Yes you can deduct those as business expenses (and even job searching expenses if he was unemployed or becomes so at some point, as long as he is looking for a job in the same general field.)  Unless it was a huge, seemingly unrealistic amount of dues/fees, then those are not red flags for auditing - but always be sure to keep any receipts/documentation tucked away in a folder!
