My dependent has an ATIN and was born during the current tax year. How can I get the $2,000 child tax credit to work? TurboTax is only allowing a $500 credit.

He was placed with us for adoption in 2024 by a qualified adoption agency and we meet all requirements needed for the $2,000 child tax credit.

This IRS website states that:

The child must have an Social Security Number to be a qualifying child eligible for the child tax credit (CTC) and/or additional child tax credit (ACTC).

This IRS website states that the ATIN may be used to claim the child's exemption or child care credit.

@mike-gregory92  and the SSN needs to have an issue date prior to the due date of the tax return... So if this child gets an SSN in the next few years, you can not go back and amend 2024 tax return.
