My child from a prior marriage does not qualify for as a dependent. Is it because I do not work?

Are you married to anyone else now?  Are you filing a joint return?  If you file a joint return with a new spouse, you could claim your child together if you are the custodial parent.

If your filing status is Single, then filing a tax return will not get you any child-related credits.  All of those credits require that you have income earned from working.
