Do any moving expenses count as a deduction as a self-employed missionary?

Moving expenses are generally not deductible anymore, unless you are in the military.

However, since you are self-employed,  you can take business deductions for your travel expenses as long as the following applies:

  • If they are ordinary (common and accepted in your industry) and necessary (helpful and appropriate for your business).
  • When you are away from both your home and the location of your main place of business (tax home).
  • Deductible expenses include transportation, baggage fees, car rentals, taxis, and shuttles, lodging, tips, and fees.
  • You can also deduct 50% of either the real cost of meals or the regular meal allowance. The standard meal allowance is based on the federal meals and incidental expense per diem rate.
