I've used ItsDeductible Online for the past 3 tax years, and I have my 2024 data ready to be imported. However, when I go to import into TurboTax Desktop on Windows, it asks me if I want to use the same account I'm logged into (which is the right Intuit account). Then I see a quick pop-up that reads "Contacting ItsDeductible" then it returns to TurboTax Desktop, but nothing is imported.
I've tried signing into ItsDeductible Online in my browser, I've signed out of it and back in. I've also restarted TurboTax Desktop, and I've rebooted my laptop to try again. Same behavior.
Any ideas how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.
TurboTax is working to improve the process, but in the meantime, please only use alphabet letters and spaces in your ItsDeductible descriptions. Removing any special characters, including quotes, apostrophes, etc. will allow for a successful import.
I am using the 2024 Premier desktop edition for Windows and can import using Its Deductible.
If you are using the TurboTax desktop editions for Windows, try this
Save your tax return. Close the TurboTax program
Right click on the TurboTax icon
Click on Properties
Click on the Compatibility tab
Check the box Run this program as an administrator
Click on Apply and OK
Start the TurboTax program again and see if the problem persists.
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try this (closed out, Run As Administrator, say Yes). I did the same steps, trying to import from ItsDeductible. It then again verifies what account to use, I say Yes, and it pops up "Contacting ItsDeductible" for a brief moment, disappears and returns me to the main Deductions page. Nothing is imported, no error message logged.
I even tried signing out of my Intuit account within TurboTax Desktop, and re-logging in. That also didn't work (same behavior).
I'm using TurboTax Home and Business on Windows 11.
Something to try: Are you using a VPN? If so, try without.
Appreciate the response. No VPN. I run an OPNsense firewall that I did check DNS is working properly on too.
Import ItsDeductible
There are a few workarounds within the article -
1. Make sure there are no donations entered into the tax return before starting.
2. Search for "donations" and use the -Jump to link to restart the Interview.
Left side menu > select Tax Tools > choose "Tools" > pop up screen "Tools Center", select "Topic List" > Your Deductions & Credits > "Tax Breaks" scroll down screen to "Import ItsDeductible Online". I hope this helps.
Did anyone have a solution for this issue. I have the exact same problem as explained in the thread
Unfortunately no. Long story short, I entered my information directly into TurboTax again.
Long story long, I ended up opening a case with their business account support portal. Which that is via Facebook…weird, but who knows. The TurboTax folks were very nice, but we went in circles for literally 5 weeks. I sent a debug dump of the tax return, tried starting a completely new tax return, and they had me “try” things that didn’t exist in the software. I got the feeling towards the end that they had no clue what was wrong, and were waiting for me to give up and just do it manually. That’s what I eventually did.
One thing to note that may help you: when I was entering all my line items again into ItsDeductible inside of TurboTax (where the online version gets imported into), some of my records had names that were too long for the input field. So it’s possible that the import was silently failing because the fields were too long. So if you have any that are long, try shortening the item descriptions.
Other than that, I’m pretty disappointed in the support. I’ve used TurboTax for 23 years for my own taxes, and this experience has me considering some alternatives for next year. My confidence level that they’ll actually fix a real issue is very low.
So has anyone gotten ItsDeductible to import correctly? I called Support and they could not as well. I wish they would fix this ASAP.

Yes, I downloaded from ItsDeductible with no issue when using the 2024 TurboTax Premier desktop edition for Windows.

Even support was not able to get to work for me. I am use the Deluxe version and many others have had issues as well. Not sure how you got to work :(.
To be fair, I’ve had no issues with ItsDeductible Online the past few years. This year I could not get it to work at all. I went through all the things with support, from changing passwords, cache/cookie clearing, different browsers, different computers, etc. Nothing worked. And the import would show it was “contacting ItsDeductible Online” and then disappear, and take me back to Deductions. What was the irritating part is it definitely made the login successfully, since when I’d go to log into ItsDeductible Online, I saw the last login was from Intuit TurboTax.
My best advice is to look through your entries, and make any custom item’s strings shorter. When I did enter these manually inside ItsDeductible inside TurboTax, some of them were too long. So I suspect they were causing a silent failure. I didn’t try shortening them all and re-importing, because at that point I was halfway done manually importing them.
Another user had this problem.
[quote] After a very, very lengthy call with Intuit, the problem persisted, so I acquiesced to the most involved approach, specifically doing a complete reinstallation of Windows 11 -- it worked (although is obviously very time and labor intensive). [/qoute]
Intuit needs to look into this.
I am using Windows 10 is that the issue? So how do I get ItsDeductible and Turbo Tax to work together?
Hello! I'm experiencing the same issue with ItsDeductible. I'll review my item descriptions to check if any are too lengthy. Could you let me know the maximum character limit for item descriptions? Thank you in advance for your help.
has anyone been able to get intuit to actually open a trouble ticket with regard to this issue. When i call the help desk they said they can not open a ticket because no error codes were available for the issue. so the saga continues. No trouble ticket, equals no resolution for the issue. and you have to reenter the data in turbotax. I checked the itsdeductable file on item descriptions that were long. changing the length of the titles did not help the issue. Its slightly confusing to see that someone was successful with the itsdeductable download by reinstalling windows OS.
I never was able to open a ticket. I honestly don't even know how to open an official ticket. I couldn't find that option anywhere. What I was able to do was open a "support" chat on the TurboTax Facebook business account. That's where I chatted with various people, and we tried all sorts of bizarre things to zero success.
I'm completely mystified with who reinstalled Windows 11 and had things work. That makes zero sense to me (I'm an OS developer). I did try my imports on multiple computers and multiple OS's (Windows and MacOS). Never worked. My speculation of line length is just that, speculation. I just entered things in manually again, which completely sucked, but I didn't see this getting resolved. And I'm not going to be the validation department for a product I spent money on.
As an isolation test, I went back to TT2023 and deleted the deductions. Then invoked ItsDeductible Import.
The Import for 2023 worked. Because it worked for 2023, the problem for 2024 is NOT caused by WindowsOS. The Import failure with TT2024 desktop is with the 2024 TT software and how it doesn't work with ItsDeductible Online.
Really sucks how this does not work this year. Weird how some are able to get to work while others cannot. I do not know why I cannot get it to work right.
Our tech team is currently looking into this. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
TurboTax is working to improve the process, but in the meantime, please only use alphabet letters and spaces in your ItsDeductible descriptions. Removing any special characters, including quotes, apostrophes, etc. will allow for a successful import.
I hope that does work for others. Part of the troubleshooting I did with TurboTax support was exactly that. I went through every line item I added as a custom item, and removed any characters that weren't a letter or number. The only items that had things like / or - in them were ItsDeductible items already in the database. Still wouldn't import.
The most frustrating part of this is there would be no error message at all. I'm a software engineer, and can usually figure stuff out from any indicator why an operation like import this data failed. But this would silently fail and return to the Deductions screen in TurboTax. So this led myself and TurboTax support to just keep trying random things, hoping it'd resolve.
I've long since manually re-entered everything into TurboTax and filed. I wasn't going to keep troubleshooting with support after 4 weeks of trying things.
If you're taking any input or feedback to this product for next year, please make the ItsDeductible Online inputs use whatever input parameters that you'd enforce within TurboTax itself. i.e. Don't let me put an entry into ItsDeductible that you wouldn't let me put into TurboTax. And also if you could actually display errors or warnings why an operation like the import failed, that would be immensely useful.
I fully agree with ppwaskie feedback. I will add that it would be helpful to have TechSupport people participate or at least regularly listening in on the Community. Not everything here is a tax question and finding access to Techsupport is well hidden.
I also gave up on this earlier this week and filed.
I did a few minutes ago, look through the ItsDeductible printouts I saved. I see punctuation characters in both Standard and Custom entries. So, to me, any punctuation characters used in Standard should also be allowed in Custom. I might this weekend go through my Custom entries and edit out punctuation and then run a test to see if it works. There is no way currently to edit out punctuation in Standard items. So hopefully it'll work after just editing Custom items.
One more thought. I sometimes copy and paste descriptions from other webpages. I suppose it is possible doing so also copies residual invisible HTML code into the Custom description.
I went into ItsDeductible to remove punctuation characters from Custom Items. Although I could edit the item's description, and I got a popup that said the change was successfully saved. It actually did not save the changes.
The description remained unchanged with punctuation characters still present.
Update: changing the Custom Item description results in a new duplicate custom item being added. The item you think you're modifying does not change. That one has to be deleted in another edit step.
