Itemized deductions 1040 line 12 not equal to sched A line 17

filing single.

looking at forms views:

my schedule A line 17 says 14,890

and my 1040 line 12 has 16,550

how is this possible?

If you were born before January 2, 1960 or blind, then you receive an additional $1950 added to your standard deduction.  This would make the total amount $16,550.

In other words, TurboTax is automatically applying the standard deduction because it is greater than your itemized deductions.

Thanks AnnetteB6? I have been puzzling this all morning. Does it give that info somewhere in TurboTax or on the actual forms somewhere that I missed? - ss

See IRS Pub 501 page 25 for Standard Deduction chart

You would think they would make that clear but when you trace the source of line 12, they point you to Schedule A bottom line which shows the wrong figure. I have itemized a "Qualified Disaster Loss" so not clear at all as they take the loss part along w/ the standard deduction! This year's TT is horrible - seems to be getting worse each year! I could not enter foreign income at all and had to do it via forms not step-by-step! And why do some windows scroll and others not when they both have scrollable widgets? Lots of redundant questions and lack of pulling info from last year's form as well.
