IRS Rejection due to Form 8936 (Error Code: FDI_8936_EVCredit_ErrorHold)

I submitted my return on Feb 13th and got the IRS rejected the return with error code: "FDI_8936_EVCredit_ErrorHold". I resubmitted my return on Feb 20th and the IRS rejected the return with the same error code.

On Feb 21, I opened TurbroTax with the instructions to refile. Then I reviewed my input data and found nothing wrong except for the gross vehicle weight updated to 4551lbs. The remaining data: Model 3 Standard + purchase date Mar 21, 2019 & battery capacity 54KWh. I used the maximum credit of $3750, per IRS table with 50% reduction for a $1875 credit.

Do I need to simple refile or file an amended return?

You do not need to file an amended return for your Form 8936 error.  The Form 8936 was not calculating correctly.  According to the TurboTax Help article at this link, it is scheduled to be "fixed" on 2/21/2020.  That article has a link to sign up for email notification when the Form 8936 is ready to file.

Your credit should be $3750, you got your M3 SR+ the day after me 🙂 Now if I could only get the charging station to enter correctly I would be filing too!

It is 21 February 2020 and IRS form 8936 has still not been corrected. I have signed up for the update e-mail, but nothing was sent today. Telephone support seems to think that the form was available two days ago. Oh, wait... it was available yesterday... oh, wait... you can sign up for an e-mail update that never comes.

You seem to assume that I am using the online version. The computer-based (Windows) version is confirmed by Intuit (took an hour to get information) to NOT be available.

It appears that buying the retail version was a mistake.

It is supposed to be fixed sometime today 2/21/2020.

Please also update your program before fixing it:  If you are using the TurboTax CD/Download software program, open the program, from the top, under Online, select Check for Updates.

I updated TurboTax with the "fixed" Form 8936 and filed my return on 2-20-2020.  I just received notice that my return was rejected by the IRS for errors on Form 8936, Block 23.  I checked the errors the IRS cited, but they were not present on the TurboTax form.  So I deleted Form 8936,  reentered all the data again, and refiled.  This has been a very frustrating issue with TurboTax form errors this year!

If your return rejects again there might be some residual information in your computer on the form,

Before you file again clear your cache & cookies (Hold down the keys CONTROL, SHIFT, and DELETE at the same time).

SA-F8936-046: Form 8936, 'TIN' does not match 'VIN' shown in the e-File database. Please refer to your Time of Sale report.

SA-F8936-047: Form 8936 credit amount does not match the type of credit reported in e-File database.

SA-F8936-048: The e-File database indicates this vehicle was not purchased during the tax period of the return.

I had this same error multiple times, although I haven’t found a fix nor turbo tax they only state to file by mail instead.

The rejections happen due to the IRS business rules when either:

  • VIN is incorrect (Rejection code F8936-030-01)
  • Your tax ID and VIN do not match in the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-046)
  • The credit type claimed and the amount entered on the Schedule A of Form 8936 is not matching the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-0047)
  • The purchase date is inconsistent with the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-048).

Please follow these steps:

  1. Check the report that you received from the dealer and make sure it is correct and matches what you have entered on your tax return. Dealers who sell vehicles eligible for a used (previously owned) vehicle credit under IRC 25E must furnish a report to the buyer at the time of sale and also to IRS for those vehicles to be eligible for a credit under IRC 25E
  2. Contact the dealer and make sure that they provided the correct information to the IRS and/or that they did provide the sale information to the IRS.
  3. If number 1 and 2 are true and the IRS still rejects your tax return, you will have to print and mail the return, including substantiating documentation for the claim of the credit.
