If I owe back child support in Indiana but I work in Illinois, will my tax refund go towards back child support I owe?

That will depend on whether there is an order with the IRS to seize your federal refund for back child support.  TurboTax never knows about orders to offset you refund.   The agency that enforces child support has to request it.    It is also possible to have an order with the state to seize a state refund for child support.

NOTE: You can contact the IRS Treasury Offset Program Call Center at 1-800-304-3107 to ask if they have an offset for you on file. TurboTax would not have that information.

If the debt is reported to the IRS, the IRS can hold your refund for any state's child support debt.

Your state tax refund could also be held, but you don't say what state you live in (where you file your state return as a resident).  Also Illinois and Indiana have a tax reciprocal arrangement but I don't know the details of that arrangement.

Despite their proximity to each other, Illinois and Indiana do not have a reciprocal tax agreement.

OK, thanks.

In that case, the important question is does the taxpayer live in the same state where the debt is (regardless of where they work).
