If I do not have a social security number yet for my newborn this year, can I claim my child credit on next year's tax return instead?

Does it matter if i claim my child tax credit for newborn on next year tax return?

what year was Baby born?

if 2024, then  you will need a social security card issued by April 15th to claim Baby.  It is worth up to $2000 for the child tax credit...and could be more if you are eligible for EITC.   To protect this credit, best to NOT file (but pay any tax due) and submit an extension until Oct 15.  That gives you more time to get the SS card issued.

If you file and the card is issued after April 15 (or Oct 15 with the extension), you can not go back and amend to claim the credit.

If 2025, then you have plenty of time to claim Baby for next year's tax return.

If you do not claim the child as a dependent on the 2024 tax return, you can still claim them as a dependent on a 2025 tax return.
