I was trying to take the additional tax-option by using sales tax paid over the standard allowed amount. We purchased a new car. We remodeled our kitchen. Help me?

I am in a struggle with their software. I enter my numbers and they keep saying it's wrong but won't let me change the numbers. I have a headache and a fever. I need to go to sleep right now. Sorry. What do I need to do to speak with someone tomorrow? I am out of ideas, what am I doing wrong?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) permits you to write off either your state and local income tax or sales taxes when itemizing your deductions. People who live in a state that does not impose income taxes often benefit most from this deduction. However, you might also be better off deducting sales taxes instead of income taxes if you make large purchases during the year and your total sales tax payments exceed those for state income tax. You can use either the actual sales taxes you paid or the IRS optional sales tax tables.

To edit the sales tax deduction:

  • go to Deductions and Credits
  • then Sales Tax Update
  • then Continue
  • then Easy Guide
  • this brings you to the "Places You Lived" screen
  • now click Edit
  • then continue, then continue,
  • and now you should be back to the "Enter Major Purchases" screen.

I can't change the Sales Tax.  When I select Sales Tax Update I go to the "Let's Compare Your Sales Tax and Income Tax" but  only have options for BACK and CONTINUE.

When you get to that page click  "Continue".  Select "Easy Guide" and go through the interview.  If you have made entries before you can edit those as well in this section.
