I want to claim per diem on my taxes. I was hired to teach in rural Alaska. Is being a teacher considered temporary?

I don't know if teaching is considered a temporary job.  I was hired to start work in august.  I still have family living in my house in Texas. I plan on returning to Texas in May.

Yes, this probably qualifies.  The profession is not what qualifies as a temporary location job, but the length of time.  You have stated that you are away for a job, you expect that the job should last for one year or less, and that you are still maintaining a residence in your home state of residence.  (The fact you have a familiy is an even stronger argument).  This likely qualifies when you read the requirements and allowable deductions in the following IRS link:  Pub 463.

Here is a website that can assist you in determining your per diem:

Per Diem Rates - GSA  (You enter in the place you were staying.  You will use 2016 rates for August and September, and 2017 rates for October, November and December).  As the name suggests, you count each expense per day (I actually use per overnight, as it is easier to figure out, since partial days count as partial days)  Lodging expenses will be included in travel expenses, along with airline to and from your home (but you'll not count the nights at home as per diem).  Your meal and incidental per diem will go in the Meals category.  You will enter the total, and TurboTax will calculate the correct percentage.  If you were an employee, this will be deducted on Form 2106.  This is how to access the form:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/4800418
