I took in my friend's child in 2017. I have not filed for legal guardianship. I have a notarized letter from the mother handing the child over. Can I claim this child?

Not unless the child lived with you all of 2017.

I've had her since March, so over 6 months?

Six months pertains to relatives. Non relatives must be all year.
