My company directly paid for my moving truck/packing. However, I just received a 1099-MISC (after I've already filed my taxes) with the moving cost in box 7. I know I have to file this as income, but can I still claim the moving expenses as a deductible? The invoice from the movers does have my name on it as owner, but the invoice and billing were sent directly my company.
Yes, you can claim moving expenses (if you qualify for time and distance tests) and if it was included in your gross income (box 1 of Form W-2 or Form 1099-MISC).
If your moving reimbursement was included as taxable income, your paid expenses are deductible by you.
Any reimbursement that was not taxable income cannot be deducted.
To add moving expenses (before filing):
1. Sign In or Open TurboTax
2. Select "Take me to my return" (Online)
3. Select "My Account" on top right of the screen (Online)
4. Click on "Tools" (Online)
5. Go to "Topics Search" (Online) or "Search Topics" in the top center of the screen (Desktop)
6. Type "moving expense for a job related move" and press "enter" (Online) or “ok” (Desktop) to add moving expenses.
To add moving expenses (after filing), you will need to amend your return first.
Wait for your return to be accepted or rejected by the IRS.
