I pay my mortgage in full but my name is not on the mortgage loan. Can I claim the interest? It is still in my ex's name. We are divorced and not in contact.

He left the state and I don't have contact with him. I am working on assuming the mortgage, but have been paying 100% of it for years since he left.

To qualify for the mortgage interest deduction, you must meet certain criteria. For one, you must be legally responsible for the loan. This means your name must be on the mortgage, and you must be making payments on the loan.
