Schedule 8812 (Child Tax Credit) is used to claim the Child Tax Credit (CTC), Credit for Other Dependents (ODC), and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).

Just enter your dependent information and complete your return. If your dependent qualifies for one of the credits, TurboTax will automatically add it to your return.

To qualify, your child must meet all of these requirements:

  • Be under age 17 at the end of the tax year
  • Is your child, stepchild, foster child, adopted child, sibling, step sibling, half sibling, or a descendant of any of them (for example, a grandchild, niece, or nephew)
  • Has their own Social Security number
  • Lived with you for more than half the year
  • Didn't support themselves (didn't pay more than half their own expenses)
  • Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien
    • Residents of Canada or Mexico don't qualify

Your annual income can not be more than $200,000 ($400,000 if filing a joint return).

For 2023, the tax credit will be refundable only up to $1,600, depending on your income. You must have earned income of at least $2,500 to be eligible for the refund.

You don't fill out the child tax credit form (form 8812). TurboTax (TT) automatically fills it out for you. All you do is enter the child-dependent's information in the personal information section and your W-2 for income.

If for some reason, you don't get the Child tax credit, you can have TT redo it.

In TurboTax (TT), enter at:
