I know my mortgage interest is NOT deductible. so why does TT insist I enter the information anyway

TurboTax is designed in a way to ensure you don't miss any deductions you could be entitled to.  If you do not have any mortgage interest or if you know the amount exceeds the limitations, you can simply delete the input as follows to remove the message.

  1. Go to the federal section of the return
  2. Select Deductions & Credits
  3. Select Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098)
  4. Click the trash can icon to the right of each mortgage lender as shown in the sample below:
