I keep erroring out at the last step for Federal. Its asking for me to fill out Schedule 8812. Never had any dependents. Never got a payment as I have no kids.

I have no kids, I have no dependents, I have followed other threads suggestions to recheck that I stated I have no dependents under the Child Tax Credit section. I have its filled out correctly. I have deleted the 8812 form. It comes back. Obviously this is some level of error when I have no dependents, kids, and stated as such. I have no 6419 letter to use. What is the proper fix for this?

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the error and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

If you are still getting an error, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

I experience the same issue, no dependent selected and schedule 8812 comes up to be filled as an error check. I went to forms and deleted the form but same thing happen again and again.

I'm getting a similar error regarding Form 6419 and required amount entries.  I have no dependents or children.

You can enter 0 in Schedule 8812. Every one filing a tax return this year will have to complete the CTC section of the program even if they are not claiming any dependents on the 2021 return.

Under Deduction's & Credits scroll down to "You and Your Family"

Scroll down to "Child and Other Dependent Tax Credit (the LAST option) and click START

Go through the interview even if you are not eligible for the credit.

Schedule 8812 will be generated with zero dependents and the error should stop

OR

FOR DESKTOP

Simply switch to FORMS located a the top right of the screen near the search

Scroll down to, and click on, Schedule 8812

Enter ZERO for lines B1 and B2 if applicable (you didn't get any advance payments)

Since there may be some Taxpayers who received the advance payments, but are not eligible for the credit this year, the question is being asked on all returns.

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

I keep getting the same error regarding Schedule 8812 and Form 6419 loading up and yet I have not declared any children.

I have used TurboTax for over 20 years, have referred it to others and have never had to ask for help. Is there an update to fix this error?

It is not an error.

In 2021, the IRS sent out "Advance Child Tax Credit Payments".

Some people who received the payments might not claim dependents on their 2021 tax returns.

Rather than a taxpayer "forgetting" to report their payments, perhaps facing penalties, and complaining that "TurboTax never asked"  TurboTax asks EVERYONE about Form 8812 and the Child Tax Credit.

Although you will see a copy of Form 8812 in your list of Forms, if it is not relevant to your return it will not be generated and not included with your transmitted return.

This was an unique situation for tax year 2021 and should not continue unless Advance Payments are again issued.

For tax year 2021, everyone is being asked to confirm whether or not they received any Advanced Child Tax Credit payments, even when they’re not claiming children on their return.

Try this:

  1. If you’re on the Hi TurboTax Client, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, click the Pick up where you left off button
  2. Click Federal in the left pane, if you’re not already there
  3. Click Deductions & Credits in the banner
  4. Click the Show more dropdown to the right of You and Your Family
  5. Click Revisit to the right of Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits
  6. Select Continue
  7. Answer No to Did you receive any advance Child Tax Credit payments in 2021?, then select Continue
