I have no dependents and am confused by the $5000 added for dependent care benefits from an employer...what is that?

Is it in Box 10 of your W2?

Check your W2 box 12 entries.  You may have picked the wrong code in the drop down box.

Does the W have the $5000, or Box 10 of your W2?

D is for your 401K

DD is for your health insurance

W is for contributions for your HSA

That's why you got the error.  Box 10 is for Dependent Care FSA, which you don't have.

doing taxes for my daughter who is single and has zero dependents.

There is NO $5000 shown on her W2 anyplace
The "Dependent care benefits" box is blank on her W2.
She NEVER got $5,000 of dependent care benefits from an employer.

On her W2 box 14
NY-VPDI $16.21 (does have description in list)
NYPFLVP $13.11 (no description but I know it means ' NY paid family leave program')
There is nothing shown in boxes 12a 12b 12c 12d

The Free File added $5000 to her meager yearly income.  They say her employer paid her for dependent care but BOX 10 shows nothing.

HOW can I fix the addition of that $5000 income she never got and employer doesn't offer anyhow?

My recommendation is to delete the W-2 and re-enter the W-2 again.

Follow these steps:

  • Click on Wages and Income
  • Delete the W-2 statement
  • Re-enter the W-2 exactly as shown on the statement
  • You should not have an entry in Box 10.
