I have a unique situation in which I live with my aunt. She pays for housing and food at home. Everything else I pay. Am I considered supporting myself?

I am a fulltime student with a part time job.

I don't know the exact details, but if your aunt pays for Housing, Food, Rent/Mortgage, Heat, Lights etc. I suspect that she supports you.

However, she can choose tor you to not be her dependent.

This may not be wise.

  • You have a part time job, and will have to file a tax return.
  • You will still get the standard deduction.

Your aunt can choose not to claim you as a dependent

  • If she does she would file her return as Single
  • If she does claim you she would file a Head of Household
  • This status would give her some tax advantages.
