I have a 1099-DIV that has Foreign Tax Paid (< $600 so Form 1116 is not required). I am also not itemizing (no Schedule A). What option (a, b, c or d) am I choosing?

The only way I have been able to get TurboTax to remove the error on the 1099-DIV is to select option a ("Check to deduct foreign taxes on schedule a"), but again....I am not itemizing or submitting a schedule a.

Yes, you can claim a credit for Foreign Tax Paid on a 1099-Div without itemizing or submitting Form 1116, as you mentioned.

Once you have entered the info from your 1099-Div, in the Foreign Taxes  section, the first page says 'you told us you paid foreign taxes on a 1099-Div, 1099-Int..'

Although the next page says you need to complete Form 1116, this will not apply in your case.

Continue, and Review your 1099-Div entries, using Country 'RIC' and Continue.  Enter Amount of Foreign Dividend Income.

Your Foreign Tax Credit appears on Schedule 3, Part I, Line 1.

Here's more info on Claiming the Foreign Tax Credit.

@MarilynG1 Thanks for the reply, but that is not working for me.  The only way I can make the error go away in TurboTax (I am running the desktop version on a Mac) is to select "option a" in Box 7.  After going through the questions in the "Easy Step", I am left with an error so I am forced to go to the 1099-DIV form and select an option for Box 7 to make the error go away...and the only one that has worked is "option a".

It appears I either have to select 1) "option a" or 2) provide a value for "option d"
