I donated a 19' Sailboat and trailer and want to deduct it from my Federal tax return. How do I do that?

The system doesn't want to let me enter the donation.  What do I do next?

Donated to a recognized charity?
Do you have a form 1098-C from the charity?

Form 1098-C. You must attach to your return Copy B of the Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes (or other statement containing the same information as Form 1098-C) you received from the organization. The Form 1098-C (or other statement) will show the gross proceeds from the sale of the vehicle.

See IRS Pub 526 for the requirements for claiming a boat.

To simplify entering donations on your tax return, TurboTax first has you set up the Charity.

Once you do set up the Charity, you can Click on "Add Another Donation" for each instance of donating to that Charity.

If you’ve already entered (or imported) your charitable donations using TurboTax Online, you can review and edit the donations by following these steps.

  • Sign in to your TurboTax Account
  • Click “Continue your return”
  • Click “My Account” located in the blue menu bar towards the top of your screen
  • Select “Tools”
  • Select “Topic Search”
  • Type “donations”
  • TurboTax will automatically navigate to the “Donations to Charity” section
  • On the "Did you make any donations to charity in 2018?" Click Yes
  • Review and/or edit the information as necessary
