You may try deleting the information and re-enter:

  • From the menu on the left, choose Tax Tools
  • Click on Tools
  • Select Delete a Form
  • Scroll through the forms and click Delete next to any 1098 or Home Mortgage & Interest Worksheet

Return to the Deductions & Credits section to re-enter the information.

Keep in mind that mortgage interest is part of itemized deductions. You will not itemize unless the total exceeds the standard deduction for your filing status. If the total is not yet greater than your standard deduction, your entry will not change anything on your return. Keep entering your deductions until complete. The TurboTax software will determine which has the best tax benefits for you.

I included the interest expense on my home along with re taxes and when completed it appeared in the turbo tax summary screen. But finishing all data, it kept telling me to take std ded.

I had to go to forms view and manually enter the home interest  expense and it took. Why did the step by step not do it properly?

A little disappointed in this. Please explain, so others are aware of this. I'm a CPA so I caught the error.

Some TurboTax customers are experiencing an issue with their home mortgage average balance. This can cause the home mortgage interest to be incorrectly limited.  This may be affecting your tax return.
