I a legal resident an tax payer in US. I have made charitable donations in excess of $1000 back in India (last December). can I claim deduction?

Probably not, you can deduct charitable donations if you make them to qualified organizations and you itemize deductions. You're not allowed to deduct cash or property given directly to another person, family, or group that isn't a qualified organization.

To determine if the organization you donated to is eligible, ask them if they are a qualified organization for charitable purposes or search for them in the IRS Exempt Organizations lookup tool (select the first radio button before searching).
