Hurricane Irma roof replacement - June 2018 - Report on 2018 return? It allowed me to, but "event' was 9/10/2017.

So when I put the damages into the system for my 2018 taxes, I noted the event and FEMA disaster code, etc. Upon federal review I got no indication this was incorrect, but have not filed yet because I've seen conflicting information on the internet. It was a full roof replacement partially covered by insurance.

Should i remove from my 2018 return, then pull up my 2017 return and file it there?

If it was 2018 when the amount of the loss was ascertained then the disaster year is 2018, not 2017 when it occurred. So 2018 is the proper year to have the deduction. You may elect to claim it on an amended 2017 return using Form 4684 Section D, Part I on page 4.
