HSA and additional out of pocket expenses

I have an HSA account that I use to pay for some medical expenses/medical payment plans and prescriptions. We also incurred a significant amount of medical debt that we paid out of pocket, OUTSIDE of the HSA. When itemizing, am I to add EVERYTHING that was paid medical-wise? What I'm finding turbo tax is doing is taking what I inputted as actual out of pocket medical costs & subtracting the distribution amount from the HSA out of that, which is NOT the case. What the distribution of the HSA paid for was different medical costs. Am I to add our actual out of pocket plus what the HSA actually paid for so that their calculations are accurate? Does this make sense?

Yes. It makes sense. The goal when itemizing, is to report only enter the medical expenses that you paid over and above the contributions made to the HSA.

I recommend going back through the medical expenses interview

I too am having this problem.  I have only entered the above and beyond medical expenses paid in addition to what HSA account paid.  But at the end of  process TurboTax deducts the amount listed in the 1099-SA and states if amount is incorrect to go back to Wages & Income and edit your form 1099-SA.  This does not seem correct as the  amount that I paid out of pocket  was significantly greater than what was paid from HSA by over $7K because I didn't have the funds in the HSA account.

You have to look for the screen below and indicate that you used the 1099-SA for medical expenses.  If you are not deducting other medical expenses as an itemized deduction do not enter them.
