How to report HSA distributions 1/1 - 4/15

Distributions are allowed up until the filing deadline.  If I made one (or more) beyond 12/31 which are NOT reflected on my 1099-SA, I cannot find how to properly reflect this on form 8889.  TurboTax will only show the amount I entered from 1099-SA and then the form cannot be edited.  Do I enter the complete amount when asked about 1099-SA (different from what it  actually shows)?  I can find this addressed nowhere!

While contributions for 2024 can be made by April 15, 2025, distributions made in 2025 are reported on the 2025 return.

No, do not enter a different amount from your 1099-SA.  HSA distributions will be reported in the year they were distributed.  There is no deadline for HSA distributions after the expense was incurred.  The balances roll forward indefinitely.  See: What Is IRS Form 1099-SA

For HSAs, you may make contributions until 4/15/2024, and that will be deductible in 2024.  That will also not be reported on a 2024 form, but you can manually add that deduction to your tax return, when you go through the HSA interview in Deductions and Credits.

If you are making a withdrawal due to having overcontributed to the HSA, not a distribution for a medical expense, TurboTax will tell you that you overcontributed in the interview.  You will indicate that you intend to withdraw the funds, and you must do so by 4/15/25.

@taymich do you mean an HSA or an FSA?  HSA has no deadline for distributions; an FSA does.
